Ethics In Law and Business

August 10th, 2011 Comments off

I’ve discussed some ethics issues in the class that I am teaching in Human Resources Management. This has caused me to think about the times I’ve faced this issue in the practice of law. I’ve had a number of employers ask me to do unethical things and on a few occasions violate laws. I’ve refused to do it and it cost me at least two jobs as the direct result. I feel like I did the right thing, both at the time and now. But I wonder how many lawyers would do or have done the same thing. Probably not as many as one would hope for, as the temptation is to serve your immediate self-interest. And I wonder how much better our society would be if most people did the ethical thing instead of blindly following orders.

Getting Settled

I’m finally get back to a semblance of a normal routine. With the new home there is the challenge of finding bicycle routes that are reasonable in terms of length, difficulty and safety. I now have three routes of various degrees of difficulty and take between 1 and 2 hours to ride.

I rode the longest route yesterday that is nearly 20 miles and includes the Big Hill (7.5% grade for over a mile, and gets steeper mid-way up the hill). I managed to do the route in about 1:45 which isn’t too bad but leaves room for improvement. It takes 100% of my strength to make it up the Big Hill. If I was 10 lbs. lighter and a bit stronger then it would be easier, so that is my goal before the end of the year.

Going Well

I’ve now gained access to the instructor’s material for my textbooks. I can access the instructor’s guide (which is slightly useful) and the sample test questions (which is extremely useful). I also have the textbook for the next class, and my employment status was updated to reflect my doctorate level degree. This weekend I’ll prepare the mid-term exam and the lectures for net week. I’ve spend a lot of time on “up front” in preparation and administrative stuff, but that will decrease over time.

Teaching Law To Non-lawyers

August 4th, 2011 Comments off

I’ve finished teaching the first week of the 4 week night school class. The main subject of the class is an overview of  employment law issues. So far the class has gone well, with the students appearing to understand the basic legal structure for regulating employment in the U.S. and the principal laws that apply. I have to resist the temptation to go into too much detail and complications as this becomes more than they can handle. We have had some good discussions on some controversies on topics such as affirmative action. The tone has remained civil and respectful and I’ve received a few comments that the discussion is interesting.
